Sterotypes in education "here for the money"

We deal with students all the time and have many barely hidden stereotypes among faculty. The one that I hear the most is that students are only here until they get their financial aid check then leave and that this is particularly true of basic skills students. Let's start the discussion and look for evidence - to support or refute the stereotype. Then let's discuss other contributing factors to see if we can either change our attitudes or change the behavior of students.

In order to substantiate any claim, one must have/provide an evidence. Since I came on board, about three years ago, I have heard the claim many times. After, a couple of semesters I did notice that attendance two-three months into the semester drops by at least 30%. So, I kind of believed the claim. However, I have not seen any evidence for the claim-- "students are here only for money." I would like to know how many students that stop attending classes, indeed came to PVC for the money.
